Randall County sits in the Texas Panhandle, with its county seat in Canyon and portions of the city of Amarillo falling within its borders. The county operates a multi-tiered court system that includes three district courts, a constitutional county court, two county courts at law, justice courts, and several municipal courts. Court records generated across these courts — ranging from felony case files and civil judgments to family law decrees and probate filings — are maintained by either the District Clerk or the County Clerk, depending on the court of origin. Understanding which office holds a particular record is essential to a successful search.

For those researching court case information in Texas, records can be accessed through clerk offices, in-person visits to courthouses, online portals, and public access terminals. TexasStateCourts.us provides a statewide overview of the judiciary and may help users identify court structures and resources across Texas counties. In Randall County, the primary online tool for searching case records is the Randall County Judicial Records portal, which covers criminal, civil, family, and probate matters. The Randall County Clerk’s self-service site offers separate access to recorded documents such as deeds, liens, and marriage records maintained by the County Clerk.

Are Court Records Public in Randall County?

Court records in Randall County are generally open to public inspection under the Texas Public Information Act (Texas Government Code, Chapter 552). The Act establishes a broad presumption of openness for government records, including court documents, and requires that records custodians make them available during regular business hours.

Access to judicial records specifically is governed by Rule 12 of the Texas Rules of Judicial Administration, which provides that judicial records are open to the general public for inspection and copying during regular business hours. The rule complements the Public Information Act and addresses the unique context of court-generated documents.

Despite the strong presumption of public access, several categories of information are restricted or exempt from disclosure:

  • Identity of abuse and sexual assault victims — protected from public viewing under various provisions of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and Family Code
  • Juvenile case records — generally confidential under the Texas Family Code
  • Trade secrets and proprietary information — exempt under the Public Information Act
  • Records related to undercover law enforcement operations
  • Sealed records — a court may order specific case information sealed for matters involving adoptions, nondisclosures, or other sensitive circumstances
  • Records subject to nondisclosure orders — individuals who have successfully obtained an order of nondisclosure may have certain criminal records restricted from public access; the nondisclosure form is available through the Texas courts website

Records custodians in Randall County may deny access when a specific statutory exception applies. In such cases, the custodian must identify the legal basis for withholding the record. Individuals who believe access was improperly denied may seek a ruling from the Texas Attorney General’s Open Government Division.

Randall County courts also provide a Judge’s Redaction Request form and a Peace Officer Redaction Request form for individuals seeking to have personal information removed from publicly accessible court records, consistent with applicable Texas statutes.
