Jefferson County sits along the Gulf Coast in Southeast Texas, with Beaumont as its county seat. The county supports a large court system that includes multiple district courts, a criminal district court, county courts at law, justice courts spread across several precincts, and municipal courts operating in cities throughout the county. Tens of thousands of cases move through this system annually, producing records that cover everything from felony prosecutions and civil lawsuits to family disputes, probate proceedings, and minor traffic infractions.
If you're looking for court records in Texas, the Jefferson County District Clerk and County Clerk both maintain searchable online indexes and accept requests by phone, email, and mail. Public-access terminals inside the Jefferson County Courthouse let visitors review case data in person. At the state level, TexasStateCourts.us offers a gateway to court contact information and resources across all Texas counties. It's worth knowing upfront that court records in Texas are not subject to the Texas Public Information Act — they fall under a separate set of judicial rules — so understanding the correct access framework before making a request will save you time.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Jefferson County?
Jefferson County offers several ways to locate court case information depending on the type of case and how much detail you need.
Online Search Portals
Two main online tools cover the majority of Jefferson County court records:
Jefferson County Official Records Search — The County Clerk maintains the Jefferson TX Public Search portal, which provides access to over 2.8 million official public records. You can register for a free account to search indexes and download free unofficial (watermarked) copies of imaged documents. Non-certified copies can be purchased for $1.00 per page, and certified copies run $1.00 per page plus a $5.00 certification fee. The portal covers these record categories:
| Record Type | Index Coverage | Document Images |

| Misdemeanor Court Cases | August 1951 – present | Not online |

Court case data is updated three times daily. Official public records data is updated throughout the day as documents are recorded.
Jefferson County Portal (District Clerk) — The District Clerk's online portal provides searchable access to district court cases not sealed or secured by court order. Cases can be searched by cause number, party name, or date range. Viewing is free, and documents can be purchased through the site. The District Clerk also publishes separate online indexes for civil, criminal, and family cases filed in district court.
In-Person Access
Public workstations are available at the County Clerk's office on the first floor of the Jefferson County Courthouse, where staff can help visitors navigate the records systems. The District Clerk's office on the second floor also accommodates walk-in records requests.

Are Court Records Public in Jefferson County?
Court records in Texas operate under a different legal framework than most other government records. The Texas Public Information Act covers records held by executive-branch agencies, but it does not apply to the judiciary. Public access to court records is instead controlled by Rule 12 of the Texas Rules of Judicial Administration, which sets out the policies and procedures for requesting judicial records.
Under Rule 12, judicial records are generally presumed to be open to the public. That said, the rule recognizes several categories of information that are exempt from disclosure or may be restricted by court order. Records commonly excluded from public access in Jefferson County courts include:
- Sealed records — Any case file or portion of a file that a judge has ordered sealed, including certain plea agreements, settlement terms, or sensitive evidence
- Juvenile cases — Records involving minors in delinquency or dependency proceedings
- Adoption records — Files related to adoption proceedings, which are confidential under the Texas Family Code
- Trade secrets — Information designated as trade secrets during litigation
- Victim identity information — Identifying details of sexual assault victims and certain abuse victims
- Grand jury proceedings — Sealed unless a court orders disclosure
- Nondisclosure orders — Criminal records subject to an order of nondisclosure are restricted from public access
Individual courts may also redact personal identifiers — such as Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and financial account numbers — before making documents publicly available. If a request for judicial records is denied, Rule 12 establishes an appeal process through the administrative director designated by the presiding judge.
Jefferson County Criminal Court Records
Criminal cases in Jefferson County are split between two clerk offices based on the severity of the charge.
Felony Cases
All felony prosecutions are handled by the district courts and recorded by the District Clerk's office. Several district courts hear criminal matters, including the 252nd District Court (which focuses on criminal cases) and the Criminal District Court, which has jurisdiction over criminal proceedings, habeas corpus, and certain family matters. The District Clerk maintains official records of indictments, plea proceedings, trial transcripts, judgments, and sentences.
To search felony case records, use the District Clerk's criminal index or the Jefferson County Portal. Sealed and juvenile cases are excluded from online searches.
Misdemeanor Cases
Class A and Class B misdemeanors — including DUI, theft, family violence, and assault — are prosecuted in the County Courts at Law No. 2 and No. 3. The County Clerk serves as clerk of the court for these proceedings and handles filing, warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and commitments.

All district court civil filings are processed through the District Clerk's office at 1085 Pearl Street, Room 203.
The District Clerk's civil case index is searchable online. The District Clerk's office also provides downloadable forms, including the Civil Request for Process form and the Civil Case Information Sheet.
