Hunt County sits in northeast Texas with its county seat in Greenville. The county operates a multi-level court system that includes two District Courts (the 196th and 354th), a Constitutional County Court, two County Courts at Law, four Justice of the Peace Courts, and nine Municipal Courts. Court records generated by these tribunals — criminal dockets, civil filings, family law proceedings, and probate matters — are maintained by two primary custodial offices: the Hunt County District Clerk and the Hunt County Clerk. Understanding which office holds the records you need is the first step toward a successful search.

For those looking to locate court records in Texas, several official channels are available. The Hunt County Tyler Odyssey Portal provides free online access to case information across multiple Hunt County courts. Records can also be retrieved in person at the respective clerk offices in the Hunt County Courthouse at 2507 Lee Street in Greenville, through written mail requests, or via public access terminals. TexasStateCourts.us may help users locate publicly available court case information at the state level. Additionally, the Texas Department of Public Safety offers criminal history searches through its statewide database.

Are Court Records Public in Hunt County?

Most Hunt County court records are accessible to the public. Texas law establishes a strong presumption of openness for government records. The Texas Public Information Act (Government Code Chapter 552) gives any person the right to request access to records held by governmental bodies, including county clerk offices and court administrators.

Despite this broad right, certain categories of records carry restrictions or are entirely exempt from public disclosure:

  • Sealed or expunged records: Cases sealed by court order or expunged under the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure are removed from public view.
  • Juvenile records: Proceedings involving minors are confidential under the Texas Family Code.
  • Adoption records: Adoption files are sealed and accessible only to parties with legal standing.
  • Mental health proceedings: Records from involuntary commitment and other mental health filings are confidential.
  • Protective orders: Certain domestic violence protective order records may have restricted access.
  • Ongoing investigations: Records tied to active law enforcement or judicial investigations may be withheld.
  • Personal identifying information: Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and similar sensitive data are exempt.
  • Trade secrets and proprietary information: Business information submitted under seal is not publicly available.

To request records formally, submit a written request to the relevant clerk office citing the Texas Public Information Act. Each office must respond within 10 business days. If a governmental body believes a record is exempt, it must seek an opinion from the Texas Attorney General’s Open Records Division within the statutory timeframe.
